“Rīgas satiksme” announced an open tender for the development of a construction project for the adaptation of the infrastructure of the tram route No. 5 to the low-floor tram parameters
“Rīgas satiksme” informs that an open tender has been announced for the development of a construction project and author supervision for the renewal and reconstruction of the tram infrastructure of the tram route No. 5, adjusting the line section to the low-floor tram parameters.
The project envisages the adaptation of the infrastructure of the tram route No. 5 section from the intersection of Slokas Street and Jūrmalas gatve to the final point “Iļģuciems” to the low-floor tram traffic, with the total length of the line of approximately 2 kilometers. The design specification provides for:
- reconstruction of the catenary structures with construction of the new supports and reconstruction of the catenary suspension system, ensuring movement of the trams equipped with both pantograph and contact rod;
- reconstruction of the low-voltage cables feeding the catenary system and construction of the new cables with feed lines to the “Rīgas satiksme” substation in 54B Slokas Street and to the connection of electric cables in Jūrmalas gatve;
- reconstruction of the tram tracks in the section of Slokas Street from Jūrmalas gatve to Pulka Street, including construction of four entry - exit platforms;
- construction of entry – exit platforms and stop platforms in the section of the tram route No. 5 from Pulka Street to the final point “Iļģuciems”.

Implementation of the project “Adaptation of the Riga tram infrastructure to the low-floor tram parameters” in general must facilitate the use of environmentally friendly public transport and increase the number of passengers in environmentally friendly public transport. In addition, there are several objectives related to environmental sustainability:
- to increase the speed of tram movement;
- to reduce traffic jams;
- to reduce the negative impact of CO2 emissions from private cars on the environment and air quality;
- to improve the experience of travelling in public transport by increasing the quality of the provided service.
“Rīgas satiksme” submitted an application for the project to the Central Finance and Contracting Agency for attraction of the European Union Cohesion Fund co-financing for the development of the Riga tram infrastructure. Taking into account that the project is planned to be implemented by the end of 2023, “Rīgas satiksme” will start the necessary works in time to meet the set deadlines.
It is planned to implement the design works by attracting co-financing from the European Union Cohesion Fund within the project “Adaptation of the Riga tram infrastructure to the low-floor tram parameters”. The total costs of the project are estimated to be approximately 47.9 million EUR, while co-financing of the Cohesion Fund amounts to 85% of the project's eligible costs, i.e. 33.7 million EUR.
